| Return of Parliament – Winter 2023 by Temple Scott Associates – January 30, 2023 Parliament resumes sitting this week. The House of Commons reconvenes today, while the Senate will do so tomorrow. It promises to be a busy period of federal policymaking. Expect this session of Parliament to be dominated by healthcare and the economy – two policy and political areas in which the Trudeau government is navigating much more uncertain and challenging circumstances compared to its prior years in power. Joint Letter – Replacement Workers
As part of the Government’s supply agreement with the NDP, they have committed to introduce anti-replacement worker legislation by the end of 2023 – that would seek to prohibit the use of replacement workers in federally regulated sectors. The proposal to introduce such legislation raises serious concern for Canadian business, including many that play an essential role in growing our economy and ensuring that our supply chains operate efficiently.

Canada’s economy loses momentum as rate hikes take hold
The Canadian economy is slowing quickly as the Bank of Canada hikes interest rates to tamp down excessive inflation. Real gross domestic product rose 0.1 per cent in November, according to figures published Tuesday by Statistics Canada, with a preliminary estimate showing little change in December.
Minimum wage to reach highest in Atlantic Canada
On April 1, the third $1 per-hour increase to the minimum wage over the past 12 months will push New Brunswick’s minimum wage to $14.75 per hour, the highest in Atlantic Canada. Following increases totalling $2-per hour in 2022, the minimum wage is once again indexed to the province’s consumer price index, which grew by 7.3 per cent in 2022.
