Canada Sees Federal, Manitoba Leave Changes
Advocacy
- Amendments to Manitoba’s Employment Standards Code extended the period of unpaid bereavement leave
- The period of unpaid leave for the death or disappearance of a child for employees covered by the Canada Labour Code was also extended
Recent changes to the Canada Labour Code and Manitoba’s Employment Standards Code extended periods of bereavement leave for employees covered by each code.
Manitoba’s Employment Standards Code Amendment Act, which received assent and took effect May 30, increases the period of unpaid bereavement leave to five from three days. The act adds a new entitlement to five days of unpaid leave when an employee loses a pregnancy, when a current or former spouse or partner loses a pregnancy, including when a spouse or partner’s former spouse or partner loses a pregnancy, etc.
