Food insecurity and food waste have reached critical levels in Canada. One in four Canadians are unsure where their next meal will come from, with food banks recording over 2 million visits per month this year. At the same time, more than 11 million metric tonnes of edible food are wasted every year.
To help address this urgent issue, KFC Canada has partnered with Second Harvest, the country’s leading food rescue organization, to donate surplus food to community organizations.
Through KFC Canada’s national KFC Food Donation program, which has been active since 2016, restaurants across the country redirect high-quality, surplus food to those in need. In just the first month of KFC’s partnership with Second Harvest this year, the program has:
- 60%+ of KFC restaurants donate food to local community charities—36,558+ meals provided
- 167+ tonnes of greenhouse gases averted from entering the atmosphere
- 57,733,017+ litres of water prevented from going to waste
KFC Canada and its franchise partners are continuing to support team members working in restaurants through an Employee Meal Program, offering discounted and free meals to staff across its network of franchised restaurants—another example of KFC’s commitment to nourishing the communities in which they operate, from the inside out.
As food insecurity continues to rise, this program is a strong example of how KFC Canada and its franchisee team members can work together to make a measurable impact.
