Inflation rate the highest since 1983 at 7.7%

Annual inflation rose to 7.7 per cent last month, up from 6.8 per cent in April, Statistics Canada reported Wednesday in Ottawa. That’s the highest since January 1983 and well above economist expectations for a 7.3 per cent increase. The inflation gauge rose 1.4 per cent from a month earlier with gasoline, hotel rates and cars among the largest contributors to the gains in May. READ MORE.

Canada to ban making, importing many single-use plastics from December 2022

The government of Canada on Monday published final regulations to prohibit “harmful” single-use plastics, with a ban on manufacturing and importing most of these items to come into effect in December.

The ban will be on single-use plastics including checkout bags, cutlery, food-service ware made from or containing plastic that is hard to recycle, ring carriers, stir sticks and straws, the Canadian government said in a statement. READ MORE.

Today in Toronto, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced his new Cabinet after his recent election win. The Cabinet swearing-in left no doubt that the Premier felt that there was still unfinished business for most of his cabinet as most Ministers remained in same role they had.
