According to the Canadian Federal Government 2022 statistics, there are 1.19 million small businesses and of these, the Canadian Franchise Association reports an estimated 657,000 are franchise small businesses.
Why is this important? Small businesses help drive the Canadian economy from creating employment to giving back to the community. They may be small but they play a big role in our lives!
Here is the story of one of a million small business owners who support us:
Meet Melissa Verleg – THE TEN SPOT beauty bar in West Kelowna, BC
Melissa Verleg, a franchise partner of THE TEN SPOT® in West Kelowna, is celebrating a significant milestone: her one-year anniversary. Over the past year, Melissa has made a substantial impact in the community, engaging with local groups, including the town’s hockey team, and supporting various charitable organizations. Taking over the franchise as a transfer, she has breathed new life into THE TEN SPOT® in West Kelowna, revitalizing the location and making it a hub of community activity.
Melissa’s journey to becoming a business owner is both inspiring and relatable. Although she had never owned a business before, both of her parents and her husband’s parents were small business owners.
After spending 15 years as a stay-at-home mom, Melissa reached a point where her children no longer needed her as much, and she began feeling the desire to do something for herself. Not wanting to return to a traditional 9-to-5 job, Melissa, who is both independent and a high achiever, sought out a challenge that would offer fulfillment and flexibility.
After searching for the right opportunity for a few years, Melissa found that her local TEN SPOT® was for sale. It was a perfect fit for her outgoing personality. The franchise model provided her with ample support as she learned the ropes of the business, making it easy for her to succeed. Melissa is a strong advocate for the franchise, stating, “I would recommend joining THE TEN SPOT® family. We have great support, great initiatives, and a unique and fun business platform.” As she approaches her first year of ownership, Melissa has not only built a thriving business but also made many new friends along the way.
To commemorate her one-year anniversary, Melissa is partnering with Dress for Success, inviting customers to join her in supporting women in need through charitable donations. This celebration is not just about her personal success, but also about the sense of community she has cultivated in such a short time.
Melissa’s advice to others is a testament to her journey: “You can achieve so much more than you think you can. Don’t put a roof over your head—chase your dreams down. Owning your own business is incredibly rewarding.”
