Kumon North America Sponsors Book Drive To Support Local Literacy Efforts

Kumon launches sponsorship ahead of International Literacy Day on Sept. 8

Kumon North America is sponsoring a drive to collect 50,000 books for charities that support literacy, children, and families by the end of this year.

Kumon instructors at participating centers in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico are collecting new and gently used books at their centers through the end of this year. The Instructors will designate local organizations that provide resources to families—such as children’s hospitals, literacy tutors, and library fundraising groups—to receive the books. Kumon North America associates kicked off the drive this summer by collecting 16,000 books. Kumon North America comprises more than 2,500 centers.

Community members are invited to participate in this year’s drive by bringing books for all ages to a Kumon center in their area. To find a Kumon center near you, visit kumon.com/locations.

“At Kumon, we know that literacy is essential to children unlocking their potential and achieving success in school and beyond,” said Mino Tanabe, CEO of Kumon North America. “Our hope is that this book drive will make books more accessible in underserved communities and transform literacy programs in neighborhoods across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.”

Kumon, a global math and reading enrichment program, is committed to supporting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on quality education, reduced inequalities and responsible consumption and production. Sept. 8 is the 56th annual International Literacy Day. According to UNESCO, 763 million children and adults worldwide are unable to read or write.
