What inspired you to join the CFE program?
As a lawyer in the franchise industry, I’ve always recognized the importance of having a comprehensive understanding of the business side of franchising. While my legal background gave me a strong foundation in franchise agreements and disclosure, I wanted to expand my knowledge of the strategic, operational, and financial aspects of running a franchise system. The CFE program provided a unique opportunity to gain a more holistic perspective on franchising. It allowed me to better advise my clients, whether they are franchisors looking to expand or franchisees seeking to protect their investments. The program also gave me the chance to network with other professionals in the industry and stay ahead of evolving trends.
What does having your CFE Designation mean to you?
The CFE Designation reflects my ability to serve as a trusted advisor who can help clients navigate the legal, business, and financial challenges of franchising. It means I have the expertise to provide more than just legal advice; I now offer strategic insights into franchise development, growth, and operational efficiency. The CFE also enhances credibility with clients and peers, signaling a dedication to staying current in a constantly evolving industry.
What has been the most challenging part of obtaining your designation?
Finding the balance between a demanding legal practice and the commitment required for the program was challenging. As a corporate lawyer, my days are often filled with complex legal matters, so carving out time to deepen my understanding of the business side of franchising through the CFE program was no small task. That said, the structured nature of the program and its real-world relevance to my work kept me motivated. It required time management, but the knowledge gained in the CFE program has directly benefited my practice and my clients, making it a highly rewarding investment of time and energy.
Do you have any advice for current CFE participants or those looking to get started?
Approach the program with an open mind and a willingness to learn beyond your immediate area of expertise. You may already have a solid understanding of the legal aspects of franchising, but the CFE program offers valuable insights into the business and operational sides, which are equally crucial to providing well-rounded advice to your clients. Don’t hesitate to engage with your peers in the program—you’ll find that learning from others’ experiences can be just as valuable as the coursework itself. Lastly, remember that the CFE designation is an investment in your career; the knowledge and connections you gain will open up new opportunities and help you better serve your clients.
